I'm not 100% sure if this is a bug, but for me it's not possible to start a fire with a notched wooden plank and a sturdy stick. I keep both items in my inventory, but when i click on the fire, the option to light the fire only appears for the lighter and matches. Even if i equip the plank primarily and the stick secondarily or the other way around, the fire won't get started this way.

I do planks on the outside and a metal sheet for the inside. That way if zombies do start smacking on windows it's on boards that are easily replaceable. It'll also give you some time to sneak out fast if they've already broken through both the boards and windows. 2.
