Duramax broken crank.
Joined Jun 15, 2014. 79 Posts. #41 · Aug 25, 2014. I just had a broken crank come in on a lmm 2 weeks or so ago. A engineer just happen to be there (for another vehicle at the shop) when I pulled the pan off.
#1. Got the motor out and found the second from the front Main bearing spun pretty good. The bearing was pretty well chawed up. Way undersize at this point. …It is important to find the sweet spot where you can get the most clearance. Running a string around each rod helps you align the rods as you lower the crank in. You can tie each string off to hold the rod's position as you lower. Then adjust, lower, adjust, lower. Bottom line; it's a pain to do it that way.mike diesel. What happened is he drove it through a huge ass puddle and hydrolocked the engine. To everyone else who responded in this thread: cleaning the battery cables isnt going to fix this because its not the problem to begin with. The batteries are fine. I guarantee it. Pull the glow plugs and try to crank the engine.

Fully built LLY, a couple dozen hooks on it, about 40-50,000mi on it daily driving (plenty of hammering on it), light towing/nothing over 8,000lbs. This was with full billet main caps, studs, girdle, SoCal balancer and flywheel, and Fingers pistons (after I cracked my last pistons).

Then you will need to see if there is power to the solenoid. With a test light you can check the BIG wire on the starter solenoid.Tech Tips. Put it all together and fire it up. Within a few seconds the harmonic balancer bolt has backed itself off. 2011 3500HD Boken Crankshaft. New to the site and the duramax. Well, as the title states I have a 2011 LML with a broken crankshaft. Truck is bone stock with 133k miles. Is it just me or is it rediculous that this happened? The truck is sitting at the dealership now. Waiting to hear if GM is going to help with the repair costs.
The duramax engine has a long history of breaking cranks at that location. This is so much of a common issue that people have created cam shafts with altered firing orders to try to remove the stress from that point on the crank. Plenty of stock trucks have broken cranks like this.

I just got done with an engine for a guy that he broke the crank on- would start and idle fine, had throttle until about 2200rpm and then would start cutting out and running erratic. Rotate the crank until the gap in the reluctor wheel teeth straddles the flange mounting surface of the upper oil pan. Loosen the nut on the oil pump, pull the oil pump drive gear off. Slide the reluctor wheel assembly off. LML's seem to pop around the 150-200K mile mark, others are a gamble. As to harmonics, these same harmonics are present in engines running ATI balancers, it's just a natural harmonic in the engine.
