The difference between 18" & 16" is probably going to be negligible for hunting/plinking. I wouldn't even worry about it. I would absolutely pay the extra for the Sig. I think those rifles are supremely undervalued and sooner than later they’ll end up at $2k retail. 6 months ago you could find one for $1299 online.

I personally would like to add an SFAR to my 7.62 harem to have a nice lightweight 7.62 carbine but it wouldn't be the first rifle I chose in 7.62x51. So similar applies to 7.62 and .308, just reversed. Generally a rifle is marked for its intended caliber but then you can use the slightly smaller counterpart on it. So if you have a .308 you can shoot both, if you have a 7.62 you should only be putting 7.62 trough it.
