05-19-2013, 07:40 AM. On Mercury outboards, a ratcheting noise from the lower unit when you quickly back off the throttle (still in gear) is normal. The prop should not slide back and forth on the prop shaft. Either the prop nut is very loose or parts are missing/mis-installed.

I replaced first one without heating and bending out tabs. It lasted almost as long as first one. The one I installed yesterday I took hair dryer, heated and bent out tabs.
