On a side note, you can purchase cruise cash with the gift cards, and apply them to your Sign and Sail account. Yes, I've used an AARP gift card pre-cruise to purchase items but wasn't sure if they would take electronic ones at guest services. However, I didn't think of the cruise cash option.

Like any other gift card. You buy them at a 10% discount ($450 for a $500 card, $90 for a $100 card) and then can use them anything Carnival. I always buy enough to pay my entire cruise fare and then have a few for on board spending as well.
