It is not a safety issue. You cannot get locked in to the cargo area on a Forester. It's a big open box with 5 doors - 4 regular doors and the liftgate/hatch. The cargo space is a part of the passenger compartment - unlike a traditional sedan that may have a fixed rear seat and the trunk or cargo space is not a part of the passenger compartment.
