Sounds like your rifle could be a JM as not all JM stamps were perfectly executed. A pic of the stamp and serial number would clear things up. This old thread has some PDF files attached to the first post that should help with the serial number ID. Finally an Updated Marlin Dates and Production sheets.

Value is greater also but somewhat mitigated by the Ruger re-introduction of the SBL, however Ruger has now paused production on the 1895's while they build 336's so any SBL is valuable and desirable still. I like the 300 grain jacketed hollow points for hunting. These have some punch reloaded with Hodgdon 322 powder. My favorite plinking loads are also 300 grain, but in lead format with IMR Trailboss.
